Jeb Bush was born into Washington royalty, and he's never known how the rest of us live. To Jeb, the White House is a birthright to claim, not an opportunity to serve. Jeb's father ran the economy into the ground. His brother drove it into a ditch. We need to stop Jeb -- and any other Bush -- from reaching the White House again.
Over decades, the Bush family has dominated our government through their connections to the monied elite. Today, more power is concentrated in the hands of America's upper class than ever before. To stop the pattern we need to first STOP BUSH.
The story of how the Bush family rose to power.
Jeb Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush, married Dorothy Walker, daughter of wealthy Wall Street banker George Herbert Walker, in Kennebunkport, Maine in 1921. Bush soon joined his father-in-law's firm and made the Wall Street fortune which kickstarted his career in politics. As senator from Connecticut, his sons and grandsons would grow up with the children of other elite old money dynasty families.
After failing to win the Republican nomination for president in 1980, Jeb's father George Herbert Walker Bush -- named for his wealthy grandfather -- becomes vice president under President Reagan. As vice president, George H.W. Bush's signature achievements were passing government regulations favorable to his wealthy business cronies and kickstarting the failed "War on Drugs."
When George H.W. Bush ran for president in 1988, GOP activists were suspicious of his elitist roots. To win their trust, he promised "no new taxes." But in 1990, with unemployment and budget deficits rising midway through his presidency, Bush broke his promise and lost his re-election campaign two years later.
Jeb's brother George Walker ("W.") Bush was elected Governor of Texas in 1994. In 1999, Jeb followed him into a Governor's mansion when he took office in Florida. Both brothers wanted to take their Bush birthright: the presidency. "W" got his shot first. As president, George W. Bush let elites in the subprime mortgage business, pharmaceutical industry, Big Oil, and Wall Street write their own rules. The result: balooning deficits as they raided our tax dollars and crashed our economy.
On October 6th, 2008, President George W. Bush's friends and campaign contributors crashed the economy -- but it wasn't just friends. George W. Bush's brother Jeb was on the payroll of Lehman Brothers during the crash.
Jeb Bush was born and bred into the global monied elite. He got his first job in Florida from his father's connections and many of his business dealings have been linked to inside information received when his father was vice president. When the stock market crashed in 2008, Jeb was on the payroll of one of the firms responsible.
Like his father and brother, Jeb knows nothing about us, our families, or how we live. He has the same cronies, the same donors, the same advisors, and the same elitist policy agenda as his father and brother. We don't need a third Bush presidency -- we need to STOP BUSH now.
